with Chris Paton

ON ZOOM! We will send you a Zoom link after you sign up. Handouts will be available closer to the meeting date.

Learn some of the intricacies of Scottish historical, Kirk, marriage, and inheritance records.

Don’t miss our free pre-seminar on May 24, 1:30 p.m. MDT (regular W.I.S.E. meeting time), “Discover Your Scottish Ancestors”

“Here’s tae us. Wha’s like us? Damn few, an’ they’re a’ deid!” Although Scotland is currently part of Great Britain, its historical records and traditions are different from the rest of the UK.

May 31 SEMINAR, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. MDT

“Scottish Kirk Session Records”

The Presbyterian parishes compiled the Kirk Session records, now available on https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/. From antenuptial fornication and illegitimacy cases to church census and vaccination records, the “session will be called to order.”

“Scottish Marriage Records: Instantly Buckled for Life”

“Suppose that young Jock and Jenny say, ‘We two are husband and wife,’ the witnesses needn’t be many, they’re instantly buckled for life.” Chris will discuss the legal history of Scottish marriage, provide case studies, and dispel some myths along the way.

“Understanding Scottish Inheritance Records”

In Scotland, land could not be bequeathed until 1868, one of many differences between Scotland and the rest of the United Kingdom. Chris will explain the unique inheritance systems in Scotland and their many differences from the systems in the rest of the UK.
